My experiences as a tutor, soccer coach, and daycare educator have reinforced my desire to be a teacher. I believe that my different academic and volunteer experiences as well as my overall personality make me a qualified candidate for a career in education. I know that the teaching profession is an ideal fit for me. My academic experiences, volunteer experiences as well as my experience in the workforce have fostered a tremendous personal drive, and have helped me to become an independent, self-sufficient, and hardworking individual.

I have worked part-time, with a full course load during every semester, and have maintained a B average. My experiences have taught me a great deal of discipline and time management, which are essential in the teaching profession. Balancing numerous activities with my school life, family, and social life has provided me with a lot of experience with prioritization and has made me very efficient. I am greatly concerned about my community, and feel that as a teacher, I will be able to give something back. In my third year as a Human Development student at California State East Bay, I had the opportunity of undergoing a full semester of field experience as part of a pilot project.

I was responsible for planning and implementing stimulating lessons for a class with diverse needs. Finally, due to this exceptionally beneficial experience, I have learned many strategies and methods that will help me grow as a teacher and in return benefit my students. I have the ability to adapt my teaching method in order to fit the needs of the learner. Problem solving is another skill that is crucial to being a good teacher. I have learned through experience that there is always more than one way to solve a problem. If I cannot solve a problem using my own resources, I will talk to other individuals in the field to get new ideas, and consult current research.

I believe that I possess insight and determination that I can offer to my students. I would be an asset to the school and ultimately an asset to the profession. I believe that I will be able to help all my students reach their optimal potential. I would like to use my experience and skills to grow and become a motivating teacher through your program. I want to be an enthusiastic, personable, and a creative teacher for our children of the future. Theories die if they are disconnected from practice and practices that are uninspired by theories are lifeless. My teaching journey began within the confines of a classroom as a student of ITARI where we were introduced to a wide range of theories and practices from well-known phycologists such as Jean Piaget, Jerome Bruner, Eric Erickson, John Dewey, Lev Vygotsky, Howard Gardner and so on.

These theories and practices were knowledge to know and knowledge about. However, this learning made complete sense and transformed into knowledge to do when I experienced these concepts in an actual classroom. We predicted the actions and behaviors of a student in a real class scenario and tried to understand the implication of these theories. I feel these predictions were not really the enriching part of my learning. The actual learning and challenges began while I started my teaching and learning journey with the children during my internship. It took a while for me to understand this uniqueness in these little children, but this was really special to me since our teachers looked at us in a different way.

It was magical when I was able to connect my learnings and understandings in a classroom. I was able to reflect on the theories learnt. To begin with Classroom Management, Differentiated Instructions, Multiple Intelligence and lesson planning. The connections the students make with real life, boggled my mind. Though I was aware of the importance of inquiry and connections to real life, the actual experience with the students within a classroom enriched my learning. The questions asked by the students during discussions and inquiry made me think how a child could think differently. The skills they own at this age, the way they form their questions makes me think and in turn makes me an inquirer.

Being a teacher does not mean you have answers to all the questions a student may have, just like the child who understands and follows the IB learner profile attitudes, attributes and the skills, I believe that we as teachers must try to imbibe them ourselves before we ask the students to. Differentiated Instruction is one my favorite concepts and is close to my heart. This is because when I was a child my teachers rarely believed in my potential and only a few helped me battle my own fears. I would want my students to have a positive feeling when they look back at their formative years. The way teachers cater to the learning needs of the child interconnects with how well they understand each the child.

Example a lesson on trades, through discussion students learn about skilled occupations and words associated to them. This is very important for my students since they have to follow vocational trainings after three years of schooling. Lesson planning is an integral element of teaching. Firstly I detect my classroom reality and then prepare my lessons. My method of teaching is student-centered. I start my class with an informal conversation and a review on previous lesson. Then I start my class from known to unknown. Time factor also is important. My actual teaching strategies are lecturing, brainstorming, group work, story telling, role play, educational games. A conducive environment is established within the classroom for learning to take place.

Lectures are beneficial to transmit further information example a comprehension on My kitchen garden. Creative thinking is stimulated by brainstorming sessions. Group work promotes cooperative learning. This activity helps students to be more extrovert. This interaction will replicate later when they will step in the world of work. Storytelling promotes critical thinking and provides opportunity for moral development. Apart from being a role model to my students, I inculcate values such as honesty, compassion and justice in them. I believe that adolescents must be taught how to implement values in their life. Moral reasoning helps them to judge between wrong and right in real life. I device simple role play to help students portray behaviour as real situation example a scene which takes place in a bank.

Through role play students get over their shyness and enjoy participating in such activities. I deem that role play helps student anticipate future roles in life. I take recourse to educational games namely, puzzles, crosswords and scrabbles to break the monotony due to tedious work done during the day. These activities are associated with fun. Just as humour reduces tension so do these games. I also make students view educational films once in two months. I have noted that simple activities help prevocational students to acquire the English language.

As reinforcement work I give them classwork and home work to develop their writing skill. My future approach to teaching lies in making optimal use of technology. I must make maximum use of the audio visual since visual stimuli are a great teaching tool. I even want my students to learn how to use Microsoft Word for typing letters and also to do basic research via internet. I want my students to walk according to the pace of modern life. English is used everywhere, be it written or oral. According to me I incorporate audiolingual method in my teaching by making students listen to music, poems in English.

I can even teach English through physical activity via giving them commands to perform actions said in English. The more my students are exposed to this second language the better for them. As concluding note I want to emphasize on the fact that my teaching changes and my professional identity grows. The richness of my experience has helped in developing a strong nurturing bond between my students and me. Moreover, one should help them reconcile possible differences. This argument is particularly relevant if one speaks about the modern globalized world.

Overall, these teaching experiences have been of great value to me because I could better understand the challenges that educators can encounter on a daily basis. Additionally, I was able to work with students who differed significantly in terms of their age, learning needs, and language proficiency. Moreover, I was able to apply various teaching techniques that could improve the academic performance of students. This versatility of methods is important for success in different areas of education. To a great extent, these teaching experiences were critical for my professional development.

Finally, I will better anticipate the difficulties that teachers can face in the classroom. These are the main details that can be distinguished. There are always great rewards that come with teaching. Having the experience to teach anyone is self-gratifying. I was presented with a great opportunity of teaching English as a Second Language students. The experience undoubtedly opened up my eyes to the challenges as well as the benefits of teaching adults. With every experience, I was able to become stronger as a communicator, team player and teacher. The experience ultimately reiterated my passion for teaching and gave me the confidence to continue on my career path. Teaching this course was my first time teaching adult learners, and working with a native teacher.

This experience transformed my perspective on teaching English as a Second Language, as working directly with a native speaker proved to be a wonderful experience. During teaching this course, I was able to really hone and develop my lesson planning skills. I now approach this task with greater vision and ability to think about my lessons contextually, and to shape them in a manner that will be of the greatest benefit to my students. In addition to developing lessons, this process taught me much about the importance of team work and the development of ideas and plans that would best serve our group of students. Lesson plans were generated out of planning meetings with a highly cooperative teacher.

Having these useful plenary sessions prior to creating our lesson plans really assisted me in terms of organizing my ideas and gaining a better understanding of what concepts could fit with what classroom activity. The meetings were both informative and thought- provoking. We used these meetings to brainstorm and to create activities that will best meet our objectives. I learned that it is really important to think of every activity and how that activity is going to serve the students and meet with our objectives. Ultimately, teaching this course taught me how to write a plan of action. In conjunction with lesson planning, collaboration was extremely beneficial during my experience. My instructor pointed out how important group configuration is when it comes to planning.

Group configuration is influential in changing the dynamics and overall attitude of the class. Prior to this experience, I never thought about the impact group configuration has on the attitude of the class. It is also important for me to realize that group configuration becomes even more significant when teaching a class where students come from different cultures and speak different languages. After all, it can be much more difficult to speak in a non-native language with someone who also has their own accent, different from my own. For instance, we observed that Arabic speakers in the class had difficulties understanding the Chinese speakers.

This posed challenges, but involving myself in this process allows me to work on overcoming these kind of challenges. I saw that groups tended to be less productive and less hard working when allowed to remain in comfort zones per se, versus enabling themselves to speak with other diverse student groups. Additionally, I have learned that it is crucial to accommodate different learning styles and preferences in the context of classroom activities. I surmised this through observation. Students with a visual preference, for example, will work better in activities such as creating a personal life timeline.

By contrast, a student with an auditory preference will likely be more productive in a story retelling or a rewriting activity. Moreover, a tactile-oriented student, may work better in activities such as survey and report writing, while a kinesthetic student will probably be more responsive to a role playing assignment. Research has demonstrated that college students who were taught via a preferred learning style received higher scores overall than those who were taught in styles that differed from their own preferred learning style. Different learning styles and creating activities that will meet all different learning styles is challenging. Consequently, the most difficult task I encountered was providing feedback to the learners.

It was my first time giving feedback to adult learners, so I was working on a trial and error basis. The most crucial aspect of teaching is ensuring that students receive proper feedback. When students receive proper guidance and feedback, then they are more apt to making progress. While this proved to be a difficult task for me, I now know moving forward in my career the kind of feedback that is conducive to ESL students. Besides her other feedback, my teacher was also instrumental in helping me improve on my weaknesses. My instructor was able to provide me with efficient feedback and clear instructions. I was able to learn how to cut activities and move on with smooth transitions. After every activity that I presented, she used the opportunity to provide me with very helpful feedback and guided me to be a better teacher.

She was very cooperative and understanding. She explained every single step in learning the fundamentals of being an effective teacher. The process of learning included grading, inserting grades, grouping students and implanting activity transitions. I appreciate the great feedback that my instructor was able to provide. It was well-received, and I plan to use it in my career. Overall, this experience was beneficial to my learning experience and added to my passion to becoming an educator. Teaching ESL students is challenging but rewarding. Being able to create lesson plans, work in groups and provide proper feedback to my students, solidified the reasons why I chose this profession.
