There was not only a prejudice between whites and blacks, but between lighter-skinned and darker-skinned blacks. In the novel, Coming of Age in Mississippi, the main character, Anne, and her family, are African Americans. Along with the other "black" plantation workers, her and her family live in shacks without electricity or indoor plumbing. On the contrary, the "white" family's houses have electricity and indoor plumbing.

This is overbearing discrimination as the black families work unbelievably hard on the plantation just to live unsanitary while the white families live comfortably through them. This initiative is for separate bathrooms for black maids because they carry different diseases. Hilly's thoughts reflect extremely racial judgments. Treating the African Americans as though they are not people, she often depicts them as dogs or wild animals that are bringing diseases and infections into her house. In addition the maids would provide food for the family they were working for. The maids were like mothers to the babies and would teach them everything they needed to know when they were young. These choices made by the director affect the storyline and as a result, certain characters are depicted differently and the significance of some relationships built throughout the novel are taken out. Another great example is when the director adds a scene with Ms Phelan admitting to Skeeter that she found out about her writing the book. This heartfelt, captivating novel starts out with a very troubled fourteen year old girl named Lily Owens who lives with her father and their black maid Rosaleen. Her mother is dead due to an accident partially caused by Lily. As the story begins, Rosaleen gets thrown in jail and beaten up by three white men because all she wanted to do was to go into town and vote. Aibileen hears this and is disgusted, but she knows in order to keep her job, she must stay quiet about it so she continues working.

Skeeter is with the girls who were talking bad about blacks and finds it offensive that they would talk like that, so she gets up and walks into the kitchen to apologize to Aibileen. Skeeter shows remorse and expresses her regrets that Aibileen must listen to that. Another example of a time when Skeeter exploited her distaste of the morality of the discrimination in Jackson was when she carried through a plan to compile stories of black maids that would expose their treatment. These female servants do the cooking and cleaning, but their major responsibility is caring for the children. The servants get passed down within families from generation to generation, so the child they raised ultimately becomes the boss.

Skeeter asks Aibileen to help her with her newly acquired job, answering a housekeeping advice column. However, incidents that happen around Skeeter, including her mother being dishonest about what happened to their own now absent female servant, the elderly Constantine Jefferson, who raised Skeeter and who Skeeter loved like a mother, made Skeeter come to the decision to write about the experiences of the black female servants in relation to their white bosses. In the novel, Stockett shows the inequality between races, how Caucasian Americans believed they were superior, and the bigotry between social classes through the characterization of the main characters and bringing forth facts from that time setting.

These issues have changed over the years but are yet still here in a more subtle way. The novel features Janie, a young black women, as the main character. The American south during this time period saw many successful black men who committed with one another for popularity. In the novel, Joe Starks uses Janie to enhance his appearance and his social status among other successful black men. The setting serves as the basis for the theme of class, as the setting illustrates the class differences between wealthy Joe Starks and middle class Tea Cake.
